Description
I am a creative engineer, a techie. My background is in computer technology and telecoms and computer networking. I started as an electronics apprentice and help build MRI body scanners and have a BENG Hons degree in Electronic Computer Systems. I have done jobs in coding, and AI before it was really here. I was a Cisco CCIE and a VP of Technology in a boutique consultancy company working all around the world.
In 2002, I took the plunge to start a video production company because 'how hard can it be to film stuff' and my more creative journey began in earnest. My initial plan, filming Kitesurfing in Fiji and Australia didnt quite take off so I diversified into using and supplying kit for low budget Indie films and learnt to edit and colour grade in Davinci Resolve. I also got to work on some of those films too as well as my own documentaries and corporate projects.
I wrote a decent techie book in 2013 - The Digital Filmmaking Handbook (Quercus 2013) and probably need to update it as it was a bestseller at the time.
While at Maniac Film I have been a First AC, DOP, Lighting Director, Mini Crane Operator, Sound Recordist, DIT, JIB Operator, Gimbal Operator, VT Playback Operator, Camera Operator, Script Editor, Vision Mixer, DVD author, DCP Encoder, Visual Effects Producer, VFX Artist, Lighting Camerman, Photographer, Colourist, Blu-ray author, Sound Designer, Film Restorer, Documentary Maker, Interviewer, New entrant Trainer, Caption Writer, Kit Room Supervisor and worn many hats.
I still do many of the above jobs, but more Post-Production work as a Colourist, caption editor and create small VFX for films and work on restoration of older films back to Blu-ray. I am a Vision Mixer and run multi-camera Live Streams for clients or other production companies. I still offer rental kit - mostly lighting and grip these days, help in usually a technical capacity with clients to deliver what they need.
