I am an experienced Assistant Director in the TV and Film industry, having started back in 2021 with BBC studios on jobs like Father Brown and Shakespeare & Hathaway. Since then I've worked across the country on many different TV productions, from crime dramas to comedies and back to daytime mysteries. Across this time I have been fortunate to step into a 3rd AD position in a full time capacity. Having stepped up to crowd and daily 3rd on jobs when I have been a runner, and also stepping up to cover the 2nd AD on a few occasions. These experiences have helped me to develop my interpersonal skills, whether that be looking after a specific type of cast member (children etc), to becoming confident on the floor with my work alongside the director in placing and shaping supporting artists to match the scene and narrative of shows. Being a 3rd Assistant Director is an amazing way to gauge all parts of a show, and something I really enjoy doing. I get to be close to the cast and supporting artists, looking after and engaging with them in personal and professional capacities, as well as interacting with people like the Director and DOP in a creative role, learning new techniques and further developing my skills. Most recently I have been fortunate to 1st AD a short film alongside some other creatives in Birmingham. I am scheduled to do so again at the end of January on a TV pilot that is being shot short film style. Doing this is something that has really helped shape my confidence as an assistant director. Managing the floor in the highest capacity is a challenge, and something that I really enjoyed being a part of.
I have really enjoyed working on comedies across my time in the TV industry. These shows are amazing at enabling a creative mindset and delivering a product in a way that is fun and all around an enjoyable experience. The development of a script during filming a comedy is really interesting to me. I find it so artistically freeing how the narrative and dialogue can be shaped and changed depending on the cast members and the relationship the cast and director or writers have whilst in the filming process. I would love to work in a classic period drama piece such as shows like Victoria or Reign. These were my favourite whilst growing up as a teen and really encouraged my desire to work in this industry. From the amazing locations to the insane HMU and Costume work that goes into them, period dramas, for me, encompass what is it to be creative in all capacities on a TV set. My long term goal would be to direct one of these programs. It would be such a great experience to be in control of the artistic expression of a show like Reign, and something I wish to experience in the future. In the mean time I am really enjoying working creatively as a 3rd AD and a 1st AD on shorts, where I can create a narrative through the supporting artists I place, or by engaging with the director and enabling specific shots or direction for artists. The process of reading the scripts and trying to understand the direction is exciting to translate into the work we do on set. As an Assistant Director it is a very enjoyable and rewarding task to help enable the creativity of those around me.
