Special Interests

I've always been drawn to visual storytelling; it feels like the most powerful and evocative way of capturing the human experience. I was initially drawn to photography, from Sebastião Salgado's dramatic depictions of human suffering to Rennie Ellis' colourful snapshots of Melbourne life. This expanded into a desire to capture and share unique moments in time and place through the moving image.

Through my BA Joint Honours degree in Film and English, I am happiest when contributing creatively in a team. I want the chance to get into the nitty-gritty of making films professionally: getting to grips with the latest industry-standard cameras and learning from talented D.O.Ps and camera operators.

I have just returned from two years of living and working in Australia. Whilst there, I began filming a personal project, interviewing people from different ethnicities about their perceptions of 'home'. As the project developed, the narrative shifted into an exploration on how people create art from the world around them. The project fascinated me and led me to experiment with different shots; from stills of flowing streams to dynamic hand-held footage of artists in their craft. Experimenting with camerawork helped me retell interviewees' stories creatively whilst retaining the essence of my original vision.

I also worked at a film development lab over in Melbourne - I was given the film lab job as a result of my directing, photographing and editing a campaign to promote the launch of a new film camera that the shop had created. Recognising that Jazz, like analogue film, was experiencing a dynamic resurgence, I decided to collaborate with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and my jazz bar, taking photographs of virtuoso jazz musicians (Brandee Younger and Esperanza Spalding) playing in smoky bars and venues. I also play the flute!
